Vertical form fill seal machine: Selection, Configuration and RFQ Guide

The key decision

Choose a vertical form fill seal machine by proving that your product can be dosed, dropped and sealed reliably in the intended film. A high mechanical cycle rate does not establish usable output. Start with approved pack samples, product behavior and realistic changeovers, then compare the bagmaker, doser and downstream inspection as one working system. Define the test conditions and any OEM/ODM changes before accepting a price or production claim.

A vertical form fill seal machine converts rollstock into filled bags. Compare the actual product, film structure, sealing behavior and dosing equipment together. This guide helps buyers define usable pack output, changeover duties, inspection interfaces and OEM/ODM requirements before requesting a configured quotation.

Start with the product and the finished bag

VFFS suits products that can enter a vertically formed package, but the product must determine the machine configuration. Free-flowing granules, fragile snacks, dusty powders and sticky pieces create different filling and sealing problems. Send representative samples, including the difficult end of normal batch variation. Identify the finished bag style, how it will stand or hang, and whether the customer opens it once or repeatedly.

Provide a dimensioned pack drawing and filled samples rather than a bag width alone. Record target net contents, headspace, seal locations, print position and any gussets, zipper or hole features. Ask the bidder which functions are included, which need additional modules and which formats require different forming hardware.

Match film and jaw motion before comparing speed

The sealing window of the actual laminate or mono-material film is a selection input. Ask the film supplier for the current material structure and relevant sealing guidance, then run it on the proposed bagmaker. A claim that a machine handles recyclable film is too broad without the exact film and acceptable-pack criteria. Compare jaw motion, seal dwell and film support using the intended product load.

Ishida INSPIRA and Syntegon SVX are identifiable manufacturer references for this equipment family. Their specific performance statements apply to their documented configurations; use trials to assess another proposed machine.

Sealing architecture questions for a VFFS quotation
Choice Procurement implication Evidence to request
Intermittent motion Film pauses for the seal cycle Trial with the film and required fill pattern
Rotary motion Jaw and moving-film timing must match Filled-pack sealing and registration checks
Box motion Jaws follow film during part of the cycle Seal dwell and format-change demonstration
Gas flushing Product and film must support the pack objective Agreed headspace test and gas-supply scope

Treat dosing and product drop as part of the purchase

A multihead weigher, auger doser or other filling device must match product behavior and the bagger sequence. Identify who owns the interface when the doser and bagmaker come from different suppliers. The quotation should include support structures, discharge gates, product contact parts and access for cleaning rather than assuming they arrive with another package.

For fragile snacks, compare the complete fall path and breakage at saleable-pack discharge. For powders, examine dust migration into the transverse seal and the suitability of product-settling measures. For mixtures, inspect component distribution after the product has passed through every hopper and chute. Filling accuracy and clean seals must be demonstrated together.

Plan utilities, access and downstream controls

Mark the proposed line on a floor plan with film-reel loading, access doors, electrical cabinets and the route used to remove forming parts. Include safe working access to elevated weighers and cleaning zones. Confirm the actual electrical supply, compressed-air quality and pressure, extraction duties and any gas-flush connection with the equipment integrator.

Specify the signals for upstream stop, downstream backup, low film and rejected packs. Decide whether coding, checkweighing, metal detection and seal inspection belong in this supply. Identify how rejected packs are contained and reconciled. Recipe names, operator permissions and backup files should remain understandable after the commissioning engineer leaves.

Accept good packs through realistic production and changeover

Agree a trial using the intended product and production film. Inspect weight, bag geometry, registration, leakage and seal appearance with the agreed methods. Count accepted packs at the discharge of the complete line, separately from machine cycles and startup waste. Record conditions that forced a slower setting instead of presenting a brief empty-running demonstration as production evidence.

Include a film-reel change, a pack-size change and a restart following a normal stoppage. Ask an operator to use the proposed instructions and saved recipe. Record discarded film, rejected product, cleaning access and adjustments required to recover stable output. Confirm the factory trial findings and repeat the relevant checks after installation.

Define OEM/ODM deliverables and comparable quotation scope

For OEM requests, list branding, interface language, manuals, packaging and label requirements separately from engineering. An ODM request may change forming geometry, filling interfaces, guarding, access or controls. Require a feasibility review and revised drawings that state the owner of validation. The pictured manufacturer machine is a category reference and does not confer rights to relabel that brand.

Ask every bidder to identify the former sets, sealing tools, printer provision, doser, platforms, installation and trial materials included. Obtain spare-part identifiers for wear and sealing components and clarify remote-support access. Compare the same delivery terms and acceptance plan. Route the inquiry with product samples and the packaging specification attached so unresolved assumptions remain visible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between VFFS and a premade pouch machine?

A VFFS machine forms a bag from rollstock before filling and sealing it. A premade pouch machine opens and handles bags supplied in their final basic shape. Compare the full package design, film purchasing method, required features and changeovers before choosing either route.

Should I select a VFFS machine by advertised bags per minute?

Use accepted filled packs from a trial as the comparison basis. Mechanical cycle rate excludes dosing limits, settling, product contamination of seals and rejected packs. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the intended product and film, then record good output, interruptions and operating settings together.

Can one VFFS machine package powders and fragile snacks?

Possibly, but their dosing, product-drop and sealing requirements can differ substantially. Do not assume a shared bag width establishes compatibility. Submit both products, identify cleaning and changeover requirements, and request the exact doser, chute, dust-control and tooling changes needed for each application.

What should be tested before approving mono-material packaging film?

Test the exact production film for tracking, forming, registration, seal integrity and filled-bag handling on the proposed equipment. Include startup and normal interruptions. Ask the film supplier and bagmaker integrator to agree test methods and settings; a general sustainable-film claim is insufficient for acceptance.

Can I request OEM/ODM changes to a VFFS line?

Yes. Separate private-label and documentation requests from changes to bag geometry, dosing interfaces, guarding or control sequences. Engineering changes need a feasibility response, revised scope and acceptance tests. Manufacturer reference images do not establish private-label rights or an IndustryApex distribution appointment for the pictured equipment.

What information makes VFFS quotations comparable?

Send product samples, the film specification, approved pack drawings, required usable output and expected changeovers. Identify dosing, coding, inspection, platforms, utilities and installation responsibilities. Ask each bidder to return the same requirement checklist with included options, exclusions and unresolved assumptions clearly marked.
