Multihead Weigher: Selection, Cost and RFQ Guide

The key decision

A multihead weigher combines portions from several weighing hoppers to form a target dose. It is suited to projects where the product can be distributed, weighed and released predictably, but the application still needs samples. Large pieces, sticky surfaces, fragile snacks and a wide range of piece weights can change the result. Specify target weights and acceptable variation for each SKU, including the lowest dose and difficult recipes. State whether mixes require a controlled ingredient ratio.

Define the portion and material behavior

Specify target weights and acceptable variation for each SKU, including the lowest dose and difficult recipes. State whether mixes require a controlled ingredient ratio. A checkweigher inspects a finished pack downstream; it is a separate decision from the equipment creating this portion.

Match hoppers, surfaces and feed control

Hopper volume should be matched to dose size and product bulk density rather than chosen from nominal weight alone. Ask how the proposed distribution table and feed channels prevent uneven head loading, bridging or empty hoppers. Contact surfaces may need application-specific textures or other reviewed features for sticky product. Assess the drops and transfer chutes for breakage and product retention. Define whether a timing hopper is needed to synchronize with the packer. More heads do not automatically produce a better commercial result: the useful comparison is reliable target doses under your product and cycle conditions.

Coordinate the upstream feed and packer handshake

Show the elevator or conveyor feeding the weigher, the working platform and the bagger or container station below it. Define level control, replenishment and what happens when upstream product supply is interrupted. The packer’s ready signal, dose request and discharge confirmation should be described explicitly. Include recovery after an unready bag or a stopped conveyor so portions are not released into the wrong location. Cleaning access, removable contact parts and safe maintenance height belong in the layout. State power, air and data connections for the exact equipment package, including recipe and production record ownership.

Compare yield and full installed cost

Include the weigher, feed conveyor, platform, timing hopper, chute, controls and integration work in each quotation. Measure giveaway and missed cycles using actual product rather than extrapolating from a demonstration material. Budget for cleaning labor, format setup and product lost during changes. Ask for spare load-cell arrangements, actuators and contact-part wear items with a local service plan. If recipe setup or technical support requires a recurring fee, keep it visible. Shipment and installation of the platform can materially change the budget, especially where the site needs structural review or lifting access for assembly.

Test complete doses through the intended discharge

An acceptance run should record each delivered dose using a defined reference measurement, alongside cycle completion, giveaway and rejected or missing portions. Trial the minimum and maximum target weights and the difficult product conditions. Inspect breakage and mixture composition where these matter, and test feeding interruption, restart and a packaging-machine stop. The agreed duration should include realistic replenishment and cleaning or changeover events. Keep raw measurements rather than only an average accuracy claim. A stable hopper reading is useful, but acceptance should be based on what reaches the final container or bag after the complete transfer path.

Specify custom product handling and recipes

Send product samples, portion requirements, packer drawings and the control sequence with the inquiry. OEM requirements can cover branding, user-interface languages and manuals. ODM work may involve mixed products, special contact surfaces, difficult drops, counting or nonstandard hopper layouts and should have a sample-backed engineering scope. Assign recipe ownership, backup access and responsibility for future SKU trials. Confirm the part versions and software configuration in the quotation. The manufacturer family illustration explains combination weighing; it does not prove suitability for every sticky, fragile or mixed product without a representative test.

Frequently asked questions

What products should be trialed on a multihead weigher?

Trial normal and difficult products, especially extremes of piece mass, bulk density, stickiness, fragility and target dose. Mixtures also need ingredient-ratio checks. Use representative temperature and surface conditions so feeding and discharge behavior are meaningful.

How should hopper size and feeding be selected?

Select hopper volume from the dose and bulk density, then verify that channels feed heads consistently. Assess bridging, empty heads, contact texture and product breakage with samples; head count and nominal weighing range cannot establish those results.

What does the packaging-machine interface need?

Define ready, dose-request, release and completion signals, plus response to an unopened bag or stopped packer. Agree timing-hopper and chute arrangements, and test recovery so a waiting portion is not discharged into the wrong pack.

What belongs in the full weighing-system cost?

Include feed conveyor, platform, weigher, timing hopper, chute, controls and integration. Add cleaning labor, recipe setup, spare actuators or load cells, local service and installation. Compare accepted doses and giveaway under the same product trial.

How do I compare dose consistency and giveaway?

Record individual delivered doses against a reference scale, with missed cycles, giveaway and transfer losses. Test important weights, feeding interruptions and packer stops, inspecting breakage or mixture ratios where specified. Keep raw data and approved product conditions.

What can be customized in a combination weighing system?

Contact surfaces, hoppers, chutes, mixing modes, controls, branding and languages can be requested as a reviewed scope. Difficult products or custom counting need sample trials, defined recipe ownership and acceptance measured after discharge into the actual pack.
