Safety relay: Selection, Configuration and RFQ Guide

The key decision

Select a safety relay for the defined safety function, input device and final switching elements. Confirm contact behavior, reset and external monitoring with the machine risk assessment, then validate the complete circuit. A relay component rating alone does not establish machine-level safety performance. Test the defined function, relevant input faults, final switching feedback, reset and power-recovery cases against the approved requirements. Include the complete stop chain rather than only relay contacts. Record exact device codes and as-built wiring with responsible sign-off, and repeat relevant validation after changes. Submit the intended configuration and any OEM/ODM changes for project-specific feasibility review.

Define the function and circuit boundary

Identify the hazard, input device, safe state and required response. Determine architecture and required performance through the risk assessment. Emergency stop monitoring, guard monitoring and other functions may need different relay arrangements despite similar housings and supply voltages.

Match input channels and diagnostics

Specify contacts or electronic signals, channel behavior and supported testing. Confirm the exact input wiring from the manual, including relevant cross-fault detection. A spare relay with the same terminal count cannot be assumed to monitor a different switch or OSSD device correctly.

Check output loads and final elements

List contactors, drive interfaces and their actual electrical loads. Distinguish safety outputs from auxiliary status contacts. Confirm switching duty, suppression and external-device feedback, because an auxiliary output or an unsuitable contact load can undermine the intended stop arrangement.

Specify manual reset and restart

Define how reset is initiated and monitored and where the operator is located. Review power restoration and held-reset conditions against the required safety function. Resetting a monitoring relay should not be casually equated with automatically restarting hazardous motion after access or interruption.

Review timing and enclosure conditions

Where delayed outputs or timing are required, state which circuit elements use them and why. Check supply tolerance, cabinet temperature, terminal protection and mounting. The complete ordered variant and environmental installation need documentation rather than selecting by a familiar family name.

Keep wiring and replacement controlled

Deliver the as-built circuit drawing, device identifiers and validated test record. Maintenance substitution must preserve the intended input and output behavior. A relay self-check or energized LED is only a device condition and cannot replace machine-level verification after a wiring or component change.

Compare a complete safety relay scope

Decision Information to compare
Define the function and circuit boundary Safety function, risk assessment, input device and safe state
Match input channels and diagnostics Input type, channel arrangement, test behavior and fault detection
Check output loads and final elements Safety/auxiliary contacts, switching loads, contactors and feedback monitoring
Specify manual reset and restart Reset type/location, held-reset behavior and power-recovery sequence
Review timing and enclosure conditions Timing requirements, supply, cabinet environment and exact relay variant
Keep wiring and replacement controlled As-built wiring, device codes, validation records and replacement procedure

Plan installation and access

Qualified personnel must install the relay within the approved control cabinet and circuit design, following the selected manufacturer's instructions for wiring, protection and grounding. Label safety and auxiliary circuits clearly and commission with access controlled by an approved plan that avoids exposure to hazardous movement.

Agree acceptance evidence before ordering

Test the defined function, relevant input faults, final switching feedback, reset and power-recovery cases against the approved requirements. Include the complete stop chain rather than only relay contacts. Record exact device codes and as-built wiring with responsible sign-off, and repeat relevant validation after changes.

Define OEM/ODM engineering boundaries

OEM cabinet integration and approved circuit arrangements can be assessed. ODM contact, electronics, timing or safety-related changes require engineering and renewed validation. The reference relay image establishes a component family and does not certify the complete machine or imply manufacturer-authorized IndustryApex supply.
