Plastic Extrusion Line: Selection, Cost and RFQ Guide

The key decision

A plastic extrusion line should be selected from the continuous product you need to sell, including resin grade, geometry and accepted dimensions. Pipe, profile, sheet and film processes require different tooling and downstream equipment, so state the scope explicitly. Provide the smallest and largest products as well as those expected to dominate production. Define wall or sheet thickness, surface finish, color and any layer structure. Recycled content and formulation changes can affect processing, so identify them in the trial material.

Fix the finished product and resin formulation

Pipe, profile, sheet and film processes require different tooling and downstream equipment, so state the scope explicitly. Provide the smallest and largest products as well as those expected to dominate production. Define wall or sheet thickness, surface finish, color and any layer structure. Recycled content and formulation changes can affect processing, so identify them in the trial material. Nominal extruder output is not the same as usable production of a specific pipe or profile that passes the required inspection.

Match the melt process to calibration and handling

The screw, barrel, drive and die should be proposed for the resin and product range, with tool changes and wear conditions identified. Downstream calibration, cooling and haul-off must support the geometry at the requested output. Cutting, winding, stacking or belling may be the actual bottleneck and should be included in the same cycle review. Ask how line speed and melt delivery are coordinated and how dimensions are controlled. A single-screw or twin-screw label is not enough to judge the complete process. Request product-specific tooling and downstream drawings, including the intended support of hot or thin sections during transfer.

Plan utilities, line length and tool changes

Show the full line length, material feed, die-change access and discharge handling in the site layout. Cooling water quality, available heat removal and drainage need to be assessed for the proposed process rather than only total tank volume. State electrical supply, compressed air and any drying or vacuum equipment. Reserve room for raw materials, rejected product and handling long finished pieces. Define power-loss and line-stop recovery across the extruder and downstream controls. An extruder footprint without the cooling, cutting and product storage zones is not an installation plan, particularly where large pipes or wide sheet need lifting and removal access.

Compare the complete production line cost

Quote feeding, drying where required, extruder, tooling, calibration, cooling, haul-off, finishing and controls at equal scope. Include tooling for each approved product and the spare wear items expected for the formulation. Budget commissioning resin, trial waste, utility installation and operator training. Compare output and energy at a defined accepted-product condition rather than relying on a maximum kg/h headline. Identify local support for screws, dies and downstream electronics as well as the main machine. Shipment, installation alignment and tool-handling equipment should remain visible so a partial extruder offer is not confused with a complete production-line price.

Accept dimensions and output together

Acceptance should produce the agreed resin and product dimensions continuously after stabilization. Record accepted output, surface quality, wall variation and the specified finished-product tests using a defined sampling plan. Include normal start, controlled stop and a representative size or tool change. Verify cutting or winding performance and inspect downstream handling for distortion. If energy or material loss is compared, fix measurement boundaries and include rejected production. Retain process settings, resin information and approved samples. A trial on one easy product cannot establish every size in a large range, so agree which products need separate evidence before ordering.

Define ODM tooling and line ownership

Attach finished-product drawings, resin specifications, trial quantities and the site plan to the RFQ. OEM branding and language requirements can be separated from ODM engineering of dies, calibrators, layer structures and downstream controls. Agree tooling ownership, replacement access and a change process for future formulations. Identify who installs utilities and who provides local process support. The manufacturer image illustrates an extrusion-line family; its geometry or nominal capability should not be presented as a guaranteed offer. Request the exact proposed line and product-specific acceptance commitments in the final quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What data should define an extrusion line?

Define the finished pipe, profile, sheet or film, resin formulation, size range and accepted output for each important product. Include tolerances and downstream tests; maximum extruder mass output does not establish saleable production of a particular geometry.

How should the extruder and downstream units be matched?

Match melt delivery, die and screw to calibration, cooling, haul-off and the cutting or winding process. Ask for product-specific coordination and tooling drawings, since a downstream bottleneck or distortion can limit usable output below the extruder headline.

What utilities does an extrusion installation need?

Specify electrical supply, water quality and heat removal, drainage, air and any drying or vacuum needs. Show full line length, die access and finished-product storage, assigning utility installation and stop/restart recovery across all connected units.

What should a complete extrusion quotation include?

Include raw-material handling, extruder, tooling, calibration, cooling, haul-off, finishing and controls. Add product tooling, trial resin, startup waste, installation, training and wear parts. Compare accepted output and utilities at the same resin and product conditions.

How is usable extrusion output verified?

Measure continuous accepted product after stabilization, checking dimensions, wall variation, surface and specified functions. Include cutting or winding, start/stop and representative tool changes, retaining resin, settings and samples for the products included in the acceptance commitment.

Can an extrusion line be designed for custom products?

Yes. Custom dies, calibrators, layer structures and downstream handling can be proposed from product and resin files. Separate OEM presentation from ODM engineering, agree tooling ownership and validate the selected products with a documented process and utility boundary.
