Industrial Belt Conveyor: Selection, Cost and RFQ Guide

The key decision

An industrial belt conveyor should support and move the actual product through a defined route without unacceptable damage, loss of orientation or blockage. List mass, dimensions, base contact and the smallest loose parts as well as the largest carton. A soft pouch, upright bottle and molded sprue do not make the same transfer demand. Show the required start and finish elevations and any incline, curve or merge. Clarify whether the conveyor must merely transport product or also space, accumulate and present it to another machine.

Specify the transported product and route

An industrial belt conveyor should support and move the actual product through a defined route without unacceptable damage, loss of orientation or blockage. List mass, dimensions, base contact and the smallest loose parts as well as the largest carton. A soft pouch, upright bottle and molded sprue do not make the same transfer demand. Show the required start and finish elevations and any incline, curve or merge. Clarify whether the conveyor must merely transport product or also space, accumulate and present it to another machine. These are different control and mechanical functions that should be priced deliberately.

Choose belt, support and transfer geometry

Compare the proposed belt material, support bed, width, edge guides and tension arrangement against the application. Friction, temperature, oil and cleaning chemicals can change belt behavior, so supply their actual conditions. At transfers, document the smallest product base and the permissible gap or drop. Incline projects may require flights or retention features, while delicate products may need a gentler transfer than the surrounding line provides. Ask how belt tracking and replacement are performed. A catalogue conveyor length does not establish a suitable support arrangement or the ability to convey small items reliably at its ends.

Define sensors and line behavior before layout approval

Describe how each conveyor responds to an upstream release, downstream blockage, emergency stop and restart. If products can queue, decide whether contact accumulation is acceptable and how pressure on the leading product is limited. Establish sensor locations, minimum detectable products, PLC signals and responsibility for the control cabinet. Show supports, maintenance clearances, crossings and operator work positions on the layout. Include cleaning and debris removal without inaccessible cavities. Power and motor-control requirements should match the full duty, including starts under load and any reversals. A moving belt alone is not a complete production-line interface.

Compare delivered scope and maintenance access

Separate frames, belts, drives, supports, guides, transfer units, sensors, control panels and guarding within quotations. Add installation, cabling, alignment, programming and the commissioning of connected machinery. Request belt, bearing and drive spare parts by identifier, along with replacement access and routine inspection requirements. Compare layouts using usable production flow and downtime exposure rather than meters of conveyor alone. A custom curve or transfer may account for more engineering than a long straight section. Fix who supplies the site supports and who signs the integrated line acceptance so costs are not deferred into installation.

Test the route with representative product variation

Acceptance should run the actual product range through every transfer, incline and stop zone. Record dropped, damaged, skewed or jammed items and confirm output at the agreed spacing. Test a blocked discharge, start under representative load and recovery after a line stop through the commissioning team. Observe tracking and product support during a sustained run, including normal temperature and cleaning conditions where relevant. Check access to maintenance points against the installation drawing. The test should demonstrate the intended handling route; a motor running an empty belt cannot establish product transport performance.

Request engineered dimensions and controls

Include product samples, layout, elevation changes, transfer details and a control narrative with the RFQ. OEM changes can cover branding, documents and interface language, while ODM projects can alter geometry, belt features, sensors or multi-machine coordination. Ask for reviewed general-arrangement drawings and electrical interfaces before production. Define responsibilities for guarding, local installation and changes to adjacent machinery. Retain the final belt and drive identifiers in the accepted parts list. Manufacturer references illustrate conveyor families, and the actual project should be selected by product trials and a documented integration scope.

What should you include in your RFQ?

  1. Product mass dimensions and base
  2. Loose parts cartons or containers
  3. Required good throughput and spacing
  4. Transport length height and incline
  5. Belt material and contact conditions
  6. Transfer gaps and nose geometry
  7. Accumulation or continuous transport
  8. Sensors stop zones and PLC signals
  9. Cleaning dust moisture and temperature
  10. Floor supports guarding and access
  11. Power control cabinet and drives
  12. OEM dimensions and acceptance scope

For OEM / ODM requests, include the branding, packaging, configuration or engineering changes you need, initial and annual quantities, target market, sample approval and acceptance requirements. Feasibility and commercial scope are confirmed for the specific project.

Frequently asked questions

What product information determines a belt conveyor?

Provide mass, dimensions, bottom contact, fragility and the smallest and largest products, plus the transport route and output pattern. Identify whether items must remain oriented, be spaced or accumulate; those functions change the mechanical and control design.

How do belt and transfer details affect handling?

Belt friction, width and support determine how a product travels, while end geometry controls whether it crosses without tipping or falling. Trial the smallest base and difficult surfaces, including actual incline, transfer gaps and product spacing.

What should conveyor control integration include?

Define release, blocked-discharge, stop and restart behavior for every connected station. Include sensors, minimum detectable items, PLC signals, accumulation limits and control ownership, then test the complete route with actual product rather than an empty moving belt.

How do I compare complete conveyor costs?

Compare frames, drives, belts, supports, guides, transfers, sensors, panels and protection at equal scope. Add cabling, installation, alignment, programming and spare belts. Complex transfers can require more engineering than long straight sections, so length alone is a poor comparison.

What belongs in a conveyor acceptance trial?

Run the approved product range through every transfer, incline and stop zone. Record jams, losses, damage and orientation, test blocked discharge and loaded restart, and check maintenance access and belt behavior over a representative period.

Which conveyor dimensions and interfaces can be customized?

Length, width, elevation, incline, guides, belt features, sensors and controls can be requested for a custom layout. Provide product samples and station interfaces; require reviewed drawings and trials for ODM changes, with installation and guarding responsibilities assigned.
