Cable tray system: Selection, Configuration and RFQ Guide

The key decision

Support routed cables with a coordinated tray, fitting and support system selected for cable loading, spans and installation environment. The buying process should establish cable loading, support spacing, fittings and routing, and corrosion exposure. Use the comparison checkpoints to prepare a consistent quotation request, define installation and acceptance responsibilities, and identify missing accessories or evidence. OEM/ODM is a project-specific feasibility question; request written confirmation of any proposed change and the supporting documentation.

Compare configuration, interfaces and acceptance evidence before requesting an application-specific quotation or OEM/ODM feasibility review. Include the route drawing.

Support routed cables with a coordinated tray, fitting and support system selected for cable loading, spans and installation environment.

Start with the cable route and loading

A cable tray system supports an installed cable route through straight sections, fittings and supports. List cable types, mass and occupied area for each route, including deliberate space for later additions. Separate requirements for power, control and other circuits according to the project design. Width alone is not a loading assessment. The route layout also needs access for pulling, inspection and replacement without forcing unsuitable bends or crowded connections.

Match tray construction to support spans

Tray width, depth, material and construction affect load capability. Compare the supplier’s load information for the exact section and support spacing, including the conditions and assumptions used. A tray suitable at a short span may not support the same cable load across a wider gap. Locate supports on the drawing and identify concentrated loads or special fittings. Ask for the project arrangement to be assessed rather than selecting from a single nominal size.

Schedule fittings and installation hardware

Bends, tees, reducers, risers, covers, joints and mounting hardware determine whether the route can actually be built. Provide cable bending requirements and access constraints where they affect fitting geometry. Identify wall, ceiling, rack or structural mounting points and who supplies the anchors or brackets. A straight-tray price does not represent an installed system. An itemized route schedule exposes missing fittings and makes competing quotations much easier to compare.

Buying checkpoint Project information
Cable loading List cable types, mass, occupied area and spare routing allowance.
Support spacing Use the load chart for the exact tray width, depth and span.
Fittings and routing Schedule bends, tees, risers and expansion details from the layout.
Corrosion exposure Match finish and material to indoor, outdoor or chemical conditions.
Electrical continuity Specify bonding method and local installation requirements.
System evidence Check any fire or functional performance claim against the complete tested assembly.

Select material for the real environment

Indoor dry locations, exposed outdoor routes and corrosive or washdown areas can require different materials and finishes. Describe chemicals, moisture, cleaning and any dissimilar-metal contacts in the structure. Discuss cut edges and installation damage as well as the original finish. Do not infer long-term corrosion suitability from a clean catalogue photograph. The OBO MKS-Magic reference illustrates a cable tray design; material and finish must be specified for the offered components.

Address continuity, separation and movement

Bonding requirements follow the electrical design and applicable installation rules. Check the jointing system and any separate bonding conductors or accessories needed for the intended arrangement. Long routes and changes in building geometry may require provision for movement or expansion. Define segregation and dividers where the design calls for them. None of these details should be left to the assumption that a mechanically connected metal tray automatically satisfies every electrical requirement.

Check claims at the complete-system level

Fire-related or functional-performance claims apply under defined test and installation conditions. Ask for evidence identifying the relevant tray, supports, fixings and assembly, rather than accepting a logo or a general brochure statement. At handover, compare the installed route with drawings and the specified support schedule. Keep component identification, material information and required inspection records. Later expansion should be reviewed against available loading and space rather than simply filling remaining visible area.

Scope OEM/ODM with route drawings

Special dimensions, fittings, covers, labeling or mounting interfaces may be considered. Changes can affect load performance, corrosion protection and evidence associated with the original system. Submit the route and cable schedule with an OEM/ODM request, distinguishing standard cut-to-length work from a newly engineered part. Confirm sample or drawing approval and the supplier’s responsibility for revised load information. Reference-brand images do not imply authorization to copy or relabel that system.

Frequently asked questions

How do buyers choose cable tray width?

Use the cable schedule, occupied area, pulling access and planned expansion allowance. Also check cable weight against the selected tray and support span. Width by itself does not prove load capacity or that the route provides acceptable bending and segregation arrangements.

Why does support spacing affect tray selection?

Tray load capability depends on its exact construction and span. Increasing the gap between supports changes the structural demand. Use the supplier’s relevant load information and show actual support positions, fittings and concentrated loads instead of assuming one rating applies to every installation.

Are fittings included in a cable tray quotation?

Inclusion depends on the schedule. List bends, tees, risers, reducers, joints, covers and supports explicitly. Anchors and mounting brackets may also be separate. Comparing straight-section prices alone can hide substantial differences in the completeness of the route supplied for installation.

Does a connected metal tray automatically provide bonding?

Bonding must follow the electrical design and installation requirements. Check the jointing method and any additional conductors or accessories needed. Mechanical connection alone should not be assumed to establish the required electrical continuity in every system or under every site condition.

How should fire-performance claims be checked?

Request evidence for the complete specified assembly, including tray, supports and fixings under the relevant test conditions. A general statement about the product family is insufficient. Changes to support spacing or components can matter, so the installation must match the documented arrangement.

Can special tray dimensions or fittings be customized?

Provide route drawings, cable loading, support spans and environmental conditions. A manufacturer can assess special fittings or dimensions, but structural and finish changes may require revised evidence. Distinguish standard fabrication options from new designs and confirm the approval process before OEM/ODM production.
