Automatic Labeling Machine: Selection, Cost and RFQ Guide

The key decision

An automatic labeling machine should be purchased against a finished-pack appearance standard. Specify the label position relative to a bottle seam, handle or molded feature, along with the permitted skew and height variation. Round containers may need wraparound handling, whereas flat bottles often need front-and-back heads and controlled restraint. Tapered containers and flexible walls require their own sample assessment. Use real labels and filled containers in trials because liner stiffness, adhesive behavior and bottle deformation can change results.

This page covers label application; printing batch codes is a separate station with different selection criteria.

Match label heads, sensing and container control

Identify label dimensions, roll direction, core, reel size and gap or registration-mark details before selecting a head. Transparent labels and clear liners can require a sensing arrangement different from ordinary paper labels. Ask how bottles are separated, aligned and supported through application, particularly if two labels must oppose one another. A top head, wraparound module or orientation device should be quoted as a specific option with a sample-backed scope. Record adjustment references and recipe ownership so operators can reproduce a format. Extra label heads alone do not prove compatibility with a new container geometry.

Plan the conveyor and inspection interface

Show conveyor elevation, flow direction and the space available to create the necessary bottle gap. Define how the labeler reacts to missing labels, an empty roll, a bottle jam and downstream stoppage. If barcode reading or vision inspection is required, establish the lighting, field of view, reject point and data interface separately. Wet, oily or dusty container surfaces should be included in the process review rather than hidden in a speed specification. Provide power and air details for the proposed options and reserve access for roll changes, cleaning and safe recovery of a misplaced label.

Compare ownership cost across formats

Include label heads, container guidance, orientation modules, print accessories, inspection, rejection and conveyor sections in each quotation. Consumable labels can create a larger operating difference than nominal motor power, so record rejected packs and damaged rolls during trials. Ask which belts, rollers, brushes and sensor parts should be stocked locally. Account for setup time at the actual frequency of SKU changes, not a demonstration with one identical bottle. Confirm whether recipe setup, artwork changes, installation and training are included. Agree how future containers will be evaluated before buying a supposed universal labeling platform.

Test label quality and changeover recovery

Agree a sample set covering container variation, label roll variation and normal line conditions. Measure placement from a consistent datum and inspect skew, wrinkles, bubbles, edge lift and front/back registration. Test roll replenishment, a deliberate missing-label condition and restart after accumulation. Where coding or barcode inspection is part of the scope, verify both the printed information and successful rejection of an agreed faulty pack. Complete a format change with the intended operators and retain the adjustment record. Acceptance should describe usable labeled packs, not just labels dispensed from a head during an isolated demonstration.

Describe branding and engineered adaptations

Send the inquiry with container files, actual label samples, artwork, tolerances and a line drawing. OEM requirements can include machine branding, manual language and a supported interface language. ODM changes such as nonstandard bottle orientation, unusual tapered labels or integration of several inspection stations require an engineering proposal and trial evidence. Clarify ownership of format parts, recipes and vision settings. The final quotation should name the container and label versions that were tested. Manufacturer examples help explain possible arrangements; they do not establish that every illustrated option is included in an IndustryApex project.

What should you include in your RFQ?

  1. Container drawings and filled samples
  2. Label artwork and dimensions
  3. Label roll core and winding direction
  4. Adhesive and liner specification
  5. Round flat tapered or flexible containers
  6. Placement tolerance and orientation datum
  7. Required good packs per shift
  8. Barcode and print inspection needs
  9. Format changes and adjustment records
  10. Conveyor height and upstream spacing
  11. Site environment and utilities
  12. OEM languages and acceptance scope

For OEM / ODM requests, include the branding, packaging, configuration or engineering changes you need, initial and annual quantities, target market, sample approval and acceptance requirements. Feasibility and commercial scope are confirmed for the specific project.

Frequently asked questions

Can a double-sided labeler label round bottles?

A double-sided labeler may handle round bottles when the offered configuration includes suitable wraparound or orientation equipment. Verify the exact module with real bottles and labels; two application heads alone do not establish round-container compatibility.

What information is needed for transparent labels?

Provide transparent label and liner samples, winding direction, registration features, adhesive and container surface. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the proposed sensing method and repeatable placement, including normal roll variation and the actual production speed.

How does a labeler connect to a filling line?

Specify conveyor height, product gaps, orientation, speed coordination and stop/restart signals between stations. Define response to missing labels, empty rolls and downstream blockage, plus the reject and inspection interfaces where these are included.

What should a labeling-machine quotation include?

Include label heads, guidance, bottle separation, orientation modules, conveyors and any coding or inspection. Add format parts, setup, wear items, installation and training. Compare accepted labeled packs and actual changeover labor across the intended SKU mix.

How do I test label placement accuracy?

Measure label height, skew and registration from an agreed container datum on representative filled packs. Inspect bubbles, wrinkles and edge lift, and include roll replacement, missing-label detection and restart after accumulation in the acceptance run.

Which labeler features can be customized?

Branding, interface language, guides, orientation, label heads and inspection can be requested as a defined customization scope. Nonstandard tapered or flexible containers need samples, reviewed fixtures and placement criteria before the manufacturer confirms feasibility.
