Evaluate CNC machine tending cycle time through the complete production record, including part exchange, machine waiting, replenishment, inspection and changeovers. Compare accepted parts from the agreed part family under documented conditions; a fast robot clip does not establish the output of the installed cell.

Define the output boundary before timing the robot
Identify the part family, machining route and point at which a part is counted as accepted. Ask whether the proposed output includes all machining operations, inspection and any rework. Keep accepted production separate from the number of robot picks or machine cycles. Record the current process on the same boundary used for the proposed cell. If the scope changes between observations, explain that change rather than treating the figures as directly comparable.
Request a time sequence rather than a headline rate
Ask the engineering study to show machining, fixture release, part exchange, machine restart and waiting as identifiable events. Request an explanation of which activities overlap and which extend the machine idle interval for the actual interface and tooling. A demonstration with a different fixture or simplified part needs an explicit limitation. Have qualified project personnel confirm the proposed sequence; do not use this procurement comparison as an instruction to adjust machine or robot settings.
Include replenishment and finished-part handling
Document how blanks arrive and how completed parts leave the cell. Ask the proposal to state operator tasks, buffer responsibilities and what happens when incoming material is unavailable or the destination is full. Include inspection and reject handling where they are part of the agreed route. A buffer demonstration should use the intended part presentation. A longer apparent unattended period does not by itself prove accepted output or establish the staffing arrangement.
Measure the changeover work included in the proposal
Identify planned changes in part geometry, grip faces, fixtures, jaws and inspection requirements. Ask for an agreed changeover task list with responsibility for tooling, setup records and first-part approval. Clarify whether quoted engineering covers only the initial family or later variants. A claimed flexible robot package should identify the actual changes that were demonstrated. Keep future conversion work and its acceptance evidence visible as separate quotation items where it is not included.
Accept a documented production case, not an animation
Agree representative and difficult parts, observation conditions, data records and reasons for stops before the trial. Ask for the accepted and rejected results alongside the complete task record. Keep factory demonstration conditions separate from the installed site, where utilities, machine condition and material flow may differ. State the treatment of interruptions, manual interventions and unresolved findings. Approve any production commitment only within the agreed equipment configuration and project documents.

Frequently asked questions
Why is robot movement time insufficient?
Ask for the complete production sequence and accepted-part record. Robot movement alone leaves machine waiting, replenishment, inspection, interruptions and any manual tasks outside the comparison.
How should mixed batches be assessed?
Provide the actual part families and planned batch changes. Agree the tooling, setup and first-part approval tasks to demonstrate, and separate initial-family engineering from later conversion work.
Should a factory trial and site test use the same boundary?
Agree consistent part and inspection definitions while identifying conditions that can only be demonstrated at the installed site. Document differences rather than assuming the factory record guarantees local output.
What evidence should accompany an output quotation?
Request the configuration, part identities, task timeline, accepted and rejected results, intervention records and explicit test conditions. Production commitments must be stated against the agreed scope and acceptance documents.
